Thinking back of the people I have known who are photographers--persons who seek to capture in a picture what they see as the glory of a moment's most exquisite beauty--I find that these people are loners. They are people who are completely comfortable to stand alone. In fact, they prefer the company of their lens to any other company. Most of the time.
These photographers fearlessly capture dreams. Sometimes they do that despite their cameras.
There are days I have turned the dials and adjusted every possible measurement on my camera in the hopes of capturing what I see. Instead, I have captured some other reality. Usually, that is the world I have felt while looking at what I seem unable to report. That vast space between the heart and mind is the site of some very strange alchemy sometimes. So says the camera.
Some days, the camera insists on what is right and true and real. On these days, I wonder where I am. Nevertheless, the conversation is good and passionate and honest. And the colors manage to be warm.

Very scenic photos! I think you have raised an interesting point about photographers. For me some days are like that, but you never know if you don't turn the dials.

The camera rarely allows me to show what I see and certainly doesn't show what I feel. Sometimes I wish it would though. This is when I usually try to paint what I feel. Most times it doesn't translate. It just gives me an image that will trigger the feeling again. Happy SWF.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you... there is alchemy and magic at work that we can't control. Sometimes it works with us and other times against us. When it's working with us, well, that's when things get really interesting!

You stand looking at something amazingly spiritual and you want to capture it on film but the colors don't come back the same and then you get disappointed but sometimes they capture something you didn't see and then you get very excited to have found something you missed.

ReplyDeleteI know several almost famous authors. I've read that with authors their best conversations are in their head. For some reason your comments remind me of that.
I'm no photographer but I've taken a lot of grief for my fascination with toy film cameras. The only thing I can say in my defense is that the photos from them match what I see much closer than a digital camera does.

Such a beautiful sunset! I saw one from a bus coming home from my hike the other day but was too tired to get off the bus and take photos and get the next bus. The neat thing is, there will be future opportunities, God willing! Come and visit my new blog.
