There are tree huggers and there are tree huggers. The ones that have been tree-sitting (literally) in Berkeley, California, for the past couple of years are the kind I respect. I wouldn't mind having them in my corner when the (wood) chips are done. They've been hanging out in and around a grove of oak trees that stand in the way of a planned University of California athletic center. They've been chased and taunted and deprived of food and water, but they're hanging in. I respect their commitment and their cause. I admire people who stand by what they believe, even if they have to go out on a limb. The AP has the story here.
I respect them, too, Sandy. After Hurricane Juan hit Nova Scotia 5 years ago, I came across numerous scenes of massive loss of trees and felt the same way as if I'd come across a field of slain cattle. The beautiful old trees the protesters are trying to save have no voices and need all the help they can get.
Being a native San Franciscan and having a mother who is a Cal Berkeley grad, I can attest to the committment of those "tree huggers". For many who live there, and around the Bay Area, we see this as something that is part of our culture.

I love it here in Nevada, but it is a VERY conservative state, thus some of the comments I've heard have not been as kind as those here.
Fellow native Californians, we are united in our support for full prosecution of UCB trespassers who have burdened us with greater than one million dollars of expense. It is shameful to think how some selfish criminals purposefully cost us funds that could have benefited and educated many.
