Our World Tuesday: How Do We Bind up the Brokenhearted?

From December 16, 2012
Our world is a sad and sorrowful place this week following Adam Lanza's murder of 26 people--children and adults--at Sandy Hook School in Newtown.  May we honor their innocent lives by taking real steps toward meaningful gun control laws (which is to say, have some) and doing a better job of protecting ourselves from dangerous people.

The Wayfarer
The beauty of the world hath made me sad,
This beauty that will pass;
Sometimes my heart hath shaken with great joy
To see a leaping squirrel in a tree,
Or a red lady-bird upon a stalk,
Or little rabbits in a field at evening,
Lit by a slanting sun,
Or some green hill where shadows drifted by
Some quiet hill where mountainy man hath sown
And soon would reap; near to the gate of Heaven;
Or children with bare feet upon the sands
Of some ebbed sea, or playing on the streets
Of little towns in Connacht,
Things young and happy.
And then my heart hath told me:
These will pass,
Will pass and change, will die and be no more,
Things bright and green, things young and happy;
And I have gone upon my way
Sorrowful.
(Padraic Pearse)

  1. The horror that Adam inflicted shocked everyone. If one chooses to die why impose the will on others as well. Obviously he was a sicko! Great write Sandy!

  4. things young and happy and this will change -

    So true As you grow and the burden on your shoulders get heavier and heavier , everything changes.
    I dont see why people need guns such as those used on the children.Those should really be outlawed. Period.
    If you want a gun for protection, you just need a small one.

  9. It belittles those with mental health issues to call them names.
    There is much to reflect on to try and prevent further deaths. This is the time to mourn and celebrate their short lives.
    I am confident that the surviving children and their families will survive.
    Faith, hope, trust will come to them again. Children are resilient. Trauma teams will do their jobs.
    I worked this way with my students.
    I taught 25 years with kids who survived losing a parent, losing their family to addictions, ending up in foster care.

  10. Such tragedy is the result of more than just gun laws and sick people. It's the historical mythology of violence, and the worship of that violence that has been built into your society which is the real culprit. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  16. Indeed sad and tragic, great poem.

    I have no idea why anybody would have need for a firearm with a clip that can hold 30 rounds.

  21. This tragedy leaves me speachless ! It's so horrible all these little children who had there whole life still to live. And the poor parents, what a sad Christmas it will be !
    America needs new gun laws, in some States it's easier for a 20 year old to buy a machine gun than a beer !

  29. Hi, Sandy: I believe Ann Curry has the right idea. Namely, to encourage others by example to commit 26 random acts of kindness. I am already working on that. It's a way to collectively show love as an alternative to this evil act, that has shaken all of us who love peace. May our elected leaders now come together quickly with meaningful actions. Amen.
