The annual Christmas tree light switch flicking on Saturday got off to a good start with some spirited Christmas music, complements of the middle and high school bands. The Boy Scouts struggled with some bonfires that never quite took. (Apparently, not everybody honed his Cave Man Survival skills during the last power outage.) We were warm, though. Dad and mom had arrived early and pulled up nice and close to the gazebo. Down went the windows when the band teacher got things rolling, and life was good for us in our orchestra seats.

Santa arrived in the fire department's hose truck, climbed the steps of the gazebo, flicked the switch to the Christmas tree, and was gone again. Takes about three minutes.

He waves for the entire three minutes, but his union contract does not include talking to children or handing out candy canes or even smiling. But, heck, he's a busy guy.

It was a time of cheer for everyone.

Later in the evening, the little colored lights on the tree twinkled prettily.

Just across from the green, the hardware store had its halls decked with festive lights and fun decorations. Here's one window.

It's that time of year...
ReplyDeletethe joy that these lights can bring... it's now the season of advent. the most loved season here in the philippines.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a lovely parade.;) I love the first part of December when the celebration is still so pristine and enjoyable, before the final Christmas hype.;))

Ah, tis the season to be jolly, but those ladies in the fourth pic seem to question that!! Love your photos and do I catch a hint of cynicism in your words??? If so, it is understandable!! Somehow the current state of affairs does seem to be taking its toll on the holidays when even Santa can't smile and toss out goodies. But here's wishing you a wonderful day and a great week regardless!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas cheer is hotting up. Things moving fast. Being a bystander can be an enriching experience!

Perfect start for the season.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen much of Christmas so far, but I haven't been in Brussels'center either. I'll wait until the sun is shining to take some pictures.
ReplyDeleteYeahup, those union Santa's are hard core. At least he got the lights on. Maybe a grievance from IBEW though. They maybe should have been the one to flick the switch on Santa's signal.
ReplyDelete"It was a time of joy for everyone..." Ah well. I hope you and yours have more to smile about than Santa did.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun!! Fa la la la la.....

Lol … I guess giving out candy and smiles to kids could lead to trouble for Santa so better to leave the premises quickly. :) Love the festive red outfits on both people and pets. Sounds like a fun event ... and I bet the music was awesome!
ReplyDeleteWe took some shots yesterday but at night they didn't come out as nice as it really was in front of houses.
ReplyDeleteOne woman was a bit upset to see lights flashing in front of her house.
So why decorate? People will come to see lol Isn't this what it's all about? lol
Santa should have stayed a while but like you say he has a lot to do and the Mom's didn't look happy he left lol
Tis' the season! Waving back at Santa. Maybe Santa will give me a money tree this year. Ha!
