My World Tuesday: The Cutting Edge of Fashion

I tell my daughter all the time that I live on the cutting edge of fashion--all the time being when I pull on my parka, snow pants (three-season wear, really), all of which are about 20 years old. They were wise investments from L. L. Bean. I will likely die of old age with these items freshly laundered and waiting to be of service in my closet.

Styles have changed in 20 years, though, right? They must have. Nobody dresses like I do. Take heart, I tell my daughter when she has to be seen with me in public, when plumb is again a fashionable color and snow jackets again sport patch pockets, my shopping will be done. Just the other day in the mall, I came across women's slacks with rolled hems, "Look at that!" I said to Dell. "I have been rolling my hems for the past year, and now it's the thing to do?"

I can't really take credit for the inside-out look that comes and goes at places like the Gap and Aeropostale, but I can tell you I never think twice about changing things around when they're backwards or inside out when I leave in the morning.

Those "boyfriend" pants and the Oxford sweathers I feel I have a part in, though. I have been wearing my dad's cast off sweaters for years--the same years comfortable pants have been the rule. (Alas, gone are the days of helping my father pick out my ex-brother-in-law's Christmas gifts from the Bean catalog as if I were investing in my own fashion future.  If plumb wasn't in fashion, even then, it was still available in the clearance catalog. How time flies.)

If you know me at all, you might have noticed I said mall and Gap and Aeropostale like I know about these things. Well, I know a little now. Dell and I were back on Saturday to see what was left of the Nordstrom shoe sale. (Yes. Nordstrom. Where they have all the comfortable chairs around so you don't fall over when you get a look at the prices.) I am a lousy shopper and found nothing on sale. Dell and I did walk away with new shoes, though. Now, when I feel like looking vaguely female--like I don't have Herman Munster-sized feet in my Earth shoes that are sure to see the decade out with me--I have these pretty litte things.

  4. I think we have the same taste because I love those shoes. I'm sort of seeing you as an LL Bean Annie Hall girl.

I like thrift shops because you can get more variety as opposed to cookie cutter fashion of the moment.

  8. Wonderful style statements. Nothing is old. Every fashion is recycled.

  9. Fashion is not a priority here either. However, I do admit to liking those shoes. They have style but also look comfy and durable. But it is the stripped shoelaces that really make them sing!

  12. As a dedicated "Anti-fashionista" I loved your post! I'm a total Function first sort of person! I do however like the shoes as they have a nice "funkiness" about them ;)

Thanks for a nice smile today!

  13. While I am not too crazy about those shoes, they are my two favorite colors -- blue and brown TOGETHER! I think I like the shoelaces better than the shoe.

  15. lol this was fun. I find that today they don't make things to last like they did before and I also like simple and I also believe in recycling and call them re designer clothes.lol
While my fiends throw their clothes away I collect them and say they can be used if for nothing more than rags.
I went to Nordstrom once and died when I saw the prices of nothing short of skimpy.
    And people Pay???
And then I found the sales people to scrutinize their customers. If someone looks like a Walmart customer, they really do not feel this person should be walking in their stores.
But I met one Mom who wore a lot of bling and she worked for them and said she had to look the part but then at soccer games she had to tone down a few notches to fit the Moms who wore Walmart clothes lol We were a lot more comfortable lol
    Hope you are feeling better
    :)

  16. Never get rid of the parka! The minute you do, Chanel will come out with something looking vaguely 60's and you'd be in style again! Also, when I have to actually wear "dress" shoes (like to a wedding) I have a 10 your old pair of ballet flats that are well broken-in and don't hurt my feet. (Luckily, my kids are grown so they don't roll their eyes much anymore...)

  17. Hahaha!! Very cute and tongue-in-cheek post. Those shoes are cute, I must say. I also don't get out much. I think it's been a few years since I last set foot in a mall.

What a nice mean to measure time and life.

And a wonderful proof as well, that it is the inside that counts. Please have a good Tuesday you all.

  23. lol Sandy, I never knew this about you. lol I am seeing you wandering around in your snow wear now! That "dress" is quit odd isn't it?

  24. I love your new shoes. I don’t go shopping, either. At 72 all I care about is putting something halfway decent on the old body and heading off to work. Fashion is not a word in my vocabulary. I am wearing the same things...just like you...after years and years. They still work so why buy more.

  25. Fashions keep coming back like seasons. :)
I like those new kind of shoe laces.

  26. So true. My husband and I always say (as our rationalization for wearing stuff that's decades old) everything old is new again.

  27. I wish so I was more like you!;)) What are clothes anyway? Just a stupid waste of money.;)
I am very interested in fashion, but I have my own style truly. I mix and match making it my very own, I truly do not look like anyone else. When I walk in the streets people turn and stare as I stand out in a crowd. Probably in a strange way though.;)
But fashion is funny these days, you can get away with everything and anything goes.;) And as you say, things come back in style, thus I am too determined to hod onto my old clothes and not buy so much new.;)
So keep on being yourself - there are much, much better avenues to spend your money on.;))
    xoxo

  30. your post made me chuckle. i loved to shop, well, i still do. but when i look at my closet and shoe cabinet, i think i don't need to shop for the next 10 years, and that is just fine.:p i met with folks from Nordstrom 2 years ago, and they asked me if i have already shopped "downstairs". i told them [nicely] that i couldn't afford it, and asked if they have an outlet store. oh yes, they do, and they also shopped there.:p so off i went to the outlet store.:p

  32. ha ha ha, enjoyed your take on fashion...it is interesting how it come around again as teens now are wearing what was popular in the 60s with the hippies. I tried being a hippie then and it didn't work for me. I think you need to find your own style and not copy what works for someone else...lol!

  35. I buy my clothes at thrift stores and wear them until they totally wear out. I replace buttons, fix hems and holes. When they finally break a seam because they are like paper I turn them into rags. It is very comforting from an environmental stand point to be able to wear clothes that have been worn forever. However, from a trendy and cool stand point...I truly suck! lol

  36. These past few weeks I have been cleaning wardrobes and linen cupboards, and I discovered that I have so many clothes which are more than 20 years old, but still in good shape . I still wear them of course if they fit me! But many of them are too small now. Pity!!

  37. I've been laughing all the way down to the end of the comments queue.

`you'd fit in very well in my part of the world, except you haven't mentioned gum boots (wellington's here) which are my footwear of (no) choice whenever I leave the house.

  38. I think it's important to feel comfortable inside and out...
    and it seems you are.
I am a little bit "into" clothes, but only if I feel like it.
    Otherwise , I'm a whatever.
