What do you think of when you think of comfort?
Comfort?
I think soft. Cozy.
Write that down.
He stares at me.
This is a look
I had once
Taken for
Insolence
Though I learned
Once
Taken for
Insolence
Though I learned
Once
That this is the look of
A waiting mind.
Oh. Sorry. S - O - F - T.
I am ready for the next word
On his list, but--
And cozy, miss.
How you spell cozy?
I spell. He writes.
We make our way down a long list
That ends with assuring.
For the rest of the day
My mind will replay the tape
And I will learn again
The meaning of soft
As it came through
A waiting mind.
Oh. Sorry. S - O - F - T.
I am ready for the next word
On his list, but--
And cozy, miss.
How you spell cozy?
I spell. He writes.
We make our way down a long list
That ends with assuring.
For the rest of the day
My mind will replay the tape
And I will learn again
The meaning of soft
As it came through
The searching eyes
Of a young man
Seeking the comfort
Of knowledge
In a classroom.
I think soft. Cozy.
S - O - F - T.
One Single Impression
Of a young man
Seeking the comfort
Of knowledge
In a classroom.
I think soft. Cozy.
S - O - F - T.
One Single Impression

What a wonderful story. The young man is fortunate to have a teacher who could correctly interpret the look on his face and give a helping hand.
ReplyDeleteThat does feel soft and cosy as I read it!

This poem is soft, cozy, comfortable (and wonderful).
ReplyDeleteSo much to see, so much to know, when we see the world through another's eyes. Without your understanding, his gaze would have remained insolent, insular- and the words and thought lost in the space between his world and yours.
ReplyDeleteSoft is Good. A teacher who sees with her heart? Priceless.
Oh wow. And this is why you're such an awesome teacher.
