This is one of the three wreaths the kids in my origami club created the flowers for this Christmas. This is a simple origami figure, but it confounded some of the children, nonetheless. They worked hard, though. And they got their, helping each other and occasionally crumpling a flower and tossing it aside. This group of eight or so sixth graders includes children with a wide range of abilities and attention spans. Helping them sort the flowers for the wreaths, I was struck by how their personalities came through their work. They we had a big pile of flowers to work with, each child emerged from the mass, individual and beautiful (and, in some cases, in need of a little repair). Merry Christmas.

Great picture!!

ReplyDeleteYour love for these children shines through every time you write about them. They are so lucky to have a fine teacher like you.
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful! And, you did it with 6th graders! I did the same with my 6th graders except they made 1000 cranes for the Sadako Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan. I did this 2 years in a row and then I actually went to Japan to visit the memorial (and many other places too). What an amazingly emotional place it is, with such beauty. Origami cranes from all over the world! 6th graders ROCK!
ReplyDeleteWell done!!

Hi Sandy, what a lovely piece. You must have a lot of patience working with children :).
ReplyDeleteLife and art are tightly intertwined. we each have a different viewpoint which invariably comes through even when we try to disguise it by assuming the sryle of another. Children are much more open and nowhere near as adept at camouflaging their emotion and therefore allow their essence to be more readily perceived.
ReplyDeleteGreat work you did with them to have them create something so uniform yet collective.
