These are some of the limestone panels that adorn the exterior of the USPS building on Grand Street in Waterbury, Connecticut. I didn't have my wide-angle lens with me when I took these on Sunday morning, so I had to settle for close-ups of the detail rather than frames capturing complete panels.

It has plenty of details; I'm sure people mill about outside to enjoy the art before going in.
ReplyDeleteCloseups of details are very often much more interesting than wide shots of the whole subject. this might very well be such a case. These almost look like hieroglyphics in some panels!
ReplyDeleteGreat detail. When driving through small towns around here, the post office is often one of the newest structures in town.
ReplyDeleteYours looks like it's been there a long time.
like the doves :)
ReplyDeletenice photos sandy.
have a good evening.

What detailed figures! Do you know who made them, or what the story behind them is?
ReplyDeleteGreat shots and details! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pics! I'm thinking the man who did these. What an artisan he must be!!!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting and beautiful reliefs on this building. Thanks for sharing and for your visit!
ReplyDeleteThose are incredible. Just stunning.
ReplyDeleteGreat detail photos here.
ReplyDeleteI love this! It reminds me of Greek architecture, but the subject matter is a bit different. Excellent post! (I like the close-ups.)
ReplyDeleteThe details on the panels are wonderful. I love for buildings to have interesting features and your USPS gets high marks in that regard.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful carvings in the stone. How old is the building? You don't see much detail like this any more, and especially not on post office buildings.
ReplyDeletefun closeups of slower times. nice post office.
ReplyDeleteI love the detail in these shots, you captured them perfectly.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

Oh, I like these shots of the details. So often we fail to notice lovely accents like that.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your work with MyWorld and SkyWatch.
Those limestone carvings are detailed, sharp and great. Thanks for showing these to us.
ReplyDeleteThe details are beautiful! I like the style of this sculpture..classical and modernistic at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThey look like marble panels to me, beautiful for a post office.
ReplyDeleteYou framed these so beautifully. Any one of them would make a brilliant story prompt, I'm thinking!
ReplyDeleteI must say I like the sound of "Grand Street" lol.
striking never the less.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! You did a great job of capturing all the details in the images.
ReplyDeleteSandy: The carving work is realy a neat thing on the building. You captured it nicely.
ReplyDeleteWow that is a lot beautiful sculpturing in the building, very nice.
ReplyDeleteGood - so we can have another post with the other kind of shots!
ReplyDeleteYou have the most interesting buildings there! I love the close-up shots you take, too. Nicely done - D
ReplyDeleteThat's certainly more elaborate than our Post Office, really lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat great artwork on that post office. Thank you for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could believe that our system was a solid as this building portrays it, Sandy!
ReplyDeleteAloha-
Cool engraved art!
ReplyDeletesome very nice close-up details here...thanks
ReplyDeleteInteresting details of the beautiful art works. It's a very special Post Office, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Lovely to see the designs on the limestone panels. Am sure they tell a story.
ReplyDeleteA lot of work went into carving those! It's wonderful that this kind of craftsmanship survives the weather and time.
ReplyDeleteExcellent photos. I love buildings with panels. I think this comes from my genes. The most public buildings in Athens (and not only in Athens) have panels from ancient times.
ReplyDeletecool wall art!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! The building itself is very square and rather plump, but the detail on it is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat must be Charles Lindbergh eternally flying towards the limestone sunset. I don´t mind seeing these details. Great.
ReplyDeleteAdds a lot to an otherwise austere building
ReplyDeleteLove the panels-makes me want to go create!
ReplyDeleteGreat detailed carvings! I love how some post offices are so interesting to look at!
ReplyDeleteVery cool limestone panels that I'm sure are overlooked every day. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteVery good detail shots of the lovely decor on this building. Especially liked the one with the doves. On the whole it does make the building much more interesting than it would otherwise be.
ReplyDeleteWhat a artful building ~ but I love our flag flying high above!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work.
ReplyDeleteThese etchings say so much. Once again Sandy I'm following in your blogpath, finding My World Tuesday through your blog and posting here for the first time today.
ReplyDeleteWonderful artworks! Such a skill to do such carvings! Many Europeon buildings are coverd with art work..an open air museum I thought! sending sunshine from AZ..NG
ReplyDeleteit is pretty amazing that for a building such as this, it has some impressive stonework on the side of it!
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing Sandy!
You don't see them carving on new buidings any more. It is too bad that art can't be incorporated into structures like they used to. I miss seeing lovely carvings, corbels, gargoyles etc. Now you see even metal pole barn structures for offices etc.
ReplyDeleteI love that kind of detail. Especially the birds and the sun.
ReplyDeleteTaking landscape shots can be a project for another day. . . I am so glad you got the close ups! They are such beautiful art! I love the old buildings with art on their walls. So much history brought alive for all to remember/enjoy!
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE these!!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! just two weeks ago i also visited our national post office. i just miss sending letters the old way.
ReplyDeleteI love the aeroplane. Beautiful detail on these.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being here.
