Chocolate. I love chocolate. Milk chocolate. Because milk belongs in there. You folks who swear by your dark stuff are welcome to your bitter, slick mud and it's strange aftertaste. Milk belongs in chocolate.
Even a child will tell you this.
And for this reason I gave my daughter a heart-shaped box of Dove milk chocolates for Valentine's Day--and thought I was really cool for finding them in a cool metal tin she can keep forever. Yes, I am all over the Valentine's Day gimmick. And my heart melted when my daughter looked up and thanked me for her holiday treat.
So I was pretty surprised when I came upon her the other day with her tin opened and half the chocolates still in there. "I don't like these," she said.
"How do you know?" I asked. They were there, after all. Whole. Or so I thought.
"I tried them. I don't like them."
I had a closer look. Sure enough, she took little bites out of the chocolates, found them undesirable, and put them back.
Okay, I thought. Why? why not toss them out?
I asked; I received no answer. I am left to wonder why a kid would take a mouse-sized bite out of anything as delicous as Dove chocolate and, upon finding them unsatisfactory, replace them in the box.
That's my kid and I live her dearly, but heck, that's a little weird. And unsanitary.
Still, I tried them. Found them to be quite delicious.
Why were they back in the box? My daughter knows her mother. Later in the week, the Late-February Fairy made up the difference with some lovely, smooth Cadbury bars. And we were satisfied.
And that is quite a blessing.

thank god for the chocolate fairy...
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile..
ReplyDeletethe ways of children...and parents :)
wishes,
devika
I hope you got to eat all the nibbled ones...after all the germs will stay in the family.
ReplyDeleteOkay now that is true love! Next year, I hope someone will let her buy her Mom a box of milk chocolate (oh yes, milk please!) for Valentines...then you can enjoy them together...lovely post
ReplyDeleteSandi
To me the Dove lacks the taste, and the very milky mouth-feel you celebrate to begin your post.
ReplyDeleteYou're a cool mom! Aloha-
I love the dark bitter chocolate and the sweeter milk chocolate both. If I ever figure out my kid, SuperPizzaBoy, I'll let you know. I don't think we are supposed to though, just a warning.
ReplyDeleteI understand her. When I was her age, I turned every chocolate over, poked my finger into it, and if it didn't meet my high ~standards~, put it back! Milk Dud's did it for me.
ReplyDeleteI love those Dove milk chocolates! They are so smooth and fulfilling! :)
ReplyDeleteI also like milk chocolate, Sandy. If we were near, I'd offer you a nice packet of Gianduiotti, the typical Torinese milk chocolates!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't live without chocolate!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than a little nibble of a nibbled heart shaped chocolate!
ReplyDeleteI prefer dark chocolate though, but Cadburry's is great too!
Put me in the dark chocolate camp but you've gotta love the perseverance of a child that would keep trying a bite out of a new one before determining that it too was wrong for her. But chocolate is so worth it that way. ;)
ReplyDeletesomrtimes the love of the gift id not in the eating of the giftbut to to taste and still keep it in sight
ReplyDeleteThis is reminds of the days when i used to lick up the cream in the cream biscuits and put the biscuits back in the box. My older cousin would open the box and find all the biscuits with the cream!!
ReplyDeleteLOL they do that don't they!
ReplyDeleteAs a father I am also known to be the left over disposal.
I get to eat everything they can't finish :)
What a cute story! It's so sweet that she didn't want to throw out the chocolates you'd given her, and I love her for telling you the truth (all I ever hear anymore is "fine"...teenagitis!)
ReplyDeleteFunny! Sandy, my kids do the very same thing. They put it back in the box because, like your daughter, they know their mama. Somehow they always vanish when they are in my proximity. :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad she enjoyed the next batch and it sounds like you all had a lovely Valentines day.
after valentines I bought one of those dove chocolates boxes too... mine said milk chocolates but when opened it was all dark chocolates... every single one was scarfed down by the chocoholics in this house but It was the tin I wanted.
ReplyDeleteDid she try a bite of each of them, hoping for a better result with each bit? Hey, at least she saved them for you. Smart kid.
ReplyDeletemy hubby loves dove and would have eaten them bite and all
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to have a chat with that late-February fairy. I LOVE milk chocolate. That was a sweet post. I remember reading on one trip to the pediatrician's office years ago, a framed 'letter to a parent' up on the waiting room wall. I can't remember it exactly but one of the sentences was "Don't ask me why I do these things, I don't know myself." It has stuck with me all these years. Thanks for stopping by my Camera Critters post, so nice of you and it was much apprecaited.
ReplyDeleteI find my child doing the same things. I had to tell them that left-over does not apply to half-bitten chocolate milk. In fact, anything bitten should be thrown out. Still I find bags and bags of half-bitten things in their individual ziploc baggies in my refrigerators.
ReplyDeleteI've seen someone do it in a movie... Legally Blonde. She had her heart broken by her (ex) boyfriend and her friends tried to console her with chocolate, so she took a bit out of each chocolate and put them back in the box. Maybe your kid has seen "Legally blonde"?
ReplyDeleteWell nothing says love quite like chocolate.
ReplyDeleteFunny story: parents almost reflexively eat what their children don't, and almost forget they are doing it. Those Cadbury bars sound good. Above even Belgium chocolate (we have a Belgium Connection), my favorite is Hershey's Semi Sweet Dark Chocolate.
ReplyDeleteUm... You know those chocolate chip cookies you love so well? Ever taken a good look at the chips that go into them? Yeah. Dark chocolate. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteBut even though given a choice I'll opt for the dark, it doesn't mean I'll pass on the milk. I mean, we're talking about chocolate here.
But my favorite is probably those chocolate oranges that you smack on the counter with the wrapping still on them and they break into sections...
It's a wonder I'm not Jabba the Hutt. I swear.
What a sweet story :) Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I was an admitted "sampler/replacer" of mixed chocolates as a child... mostly because my mom would be FURIOUS if I tossed a chocolate in a desperate search for an elusive nut or caramel and got a "strawberry cream"... a horror discovered only after a nibble was taken...
ReplyDeleteStill, I have to say, chocolate is a massive blessing... and sharing/giving chocolate is even better!
Because she does not want to throw away the connection with mom is my guess. And someone who knows exactly what she wants from life.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I find chocolate TOO sweet as well. :-) Happy BYB Sunday!
ReplyDeleteKids always go for the boxes. You watch and see, she will have that tin forever.
ReplyDeleteMany blessings to you this week and always.
Cadbury ... Godiva ... Sees ... Dove ...
ReplyDeleteChocolate is always a good thing it seems ... though my sister is one of the Dark Chocolate nuts (she likes those crunchy things inside her chocolates too) while I prefer Milk Chocolate w/o nuts ;--)
Sorry I've fallen so far behind. I'm hoping to catch up, but lately I've just not been at home much to log on to my computer. I'm not complaining ... just letting ya know what's up. Life is good ;--)
Hugs and blessings,
Thanks for being here.
