,I look it up and find courage
To be a marriage of
What is in the heart
With what is in the mind...
Over time,
This has come to mean
Bravery--
Acting despite fear,
And so calming the troubled heart
At every cost.
Really.
But I go back to the dictionary
And find more:
When the heart unites with
Wrath, pride, confidence, lustiness--
That is courage, too.
But who understands it this way?
Really.
Lustiness?
Courage:
The breath and pulse of
The soul.
Call it a marriage if you want.
It is courage.

ReplyDeleteCourage? ... the meaning eludes me. Maybe when all is said and done, I just think of it as the willingness to try again tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI know there is no peace without courage. No hope.
I know there isn't a teacher on the planet worth one sharp pencil that doesn't have it. There isn't a mother who reads to her children, teaches them to pray, and tucks them in at night that doesn't have it.
You certainly have the ability to make one think, to feel things with more conviction. Thanks Sandy! You've been a real "find", a gift.
I never would have understood it that way... infact I am still puzzeled about the word "unite".

"The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery."
The vicissitudes, that must be the lustiness ^^
PS.. did you know that the Dutch word "braaf" which has the same origins as the English word "brave" actually means "virtuous"... (free of vicissitudes).
ReplyDeleteNo-one ever uses it in any way that might indicate courage. It has gained a pejorative meaning over the years connecting it more with slavish obeyance than with heroic self posession, which is a bit sad.

Really? I hadn't though of lustiness taking courage. It just doesn't seem logical, or that lustiness could be courage.
Really? I like your poem, especially the beginning. It makes sense and I'm sure that bravery does calm the heart and gives us thought out courage.
