Cars Only

From February 12, 2012
When I am not at work, I am essentially alone down here on Topsail. The only problem with that is a gigantic one: I miss my daughter like I can't even say. That's not a problem that's easily stepped over, but aside from it, there is no problem. I'm good with being alone and with being on my own.  In fact, in so many ways, it seems to me I'm better this way.  Anyway, I have come to realize that life is for the birds.  They, like my best buddies the turtles, have this evolution gig totally under control.  They make it work, and they make me envious some days.  On Sunday, I took a ride down to Surf City and  froze my own tail feathers off while I watched the birds play with the wind.  From the driver's side of my little VW, I experienced the greatest lesson in poetry yet.  I love the way seagulls make good use of our rules and the pelicans just plain go.

  5. I kind of wonder sometimes what it would be like to be a bird flying way up high, but then I'm thinking about the hawks and the eagles so maybe I'd be one of those but...

  6. I wondered if Adella was making the move. Maybe after school? I hope you make some human friends soon too. Birds are by far wonderful companions.

  7. Life is all about making choices and none of them are black and white (at least in my experience). I love where I am but I miss my kids too! Hugs.

  8. The images you capture at Topsail very much remind me of our sea up here North. I have been at both beaches (Topsail was my preferred shore when living in NC) and the similarities are many, as well as differences. The later lies mostly in the temperatures and climate.;)
I too love to watch the birds at all times when we take walk on our beaches here at the North Sea. It is amazing to see them surfing the wind as you say and i am so amazed by the way they can withstand the icy cold waters.
    Lovely capture by the way.;)
And to answer your question, I use a Canon G12 Powershot. I have an image of it on my sidebar.;)

  10. Alone can be fun - for a time, and it also makes you aware of yourself - to put things in order - to go out and enjoy yourself with new friends and new ideas - my friend.

  15. I know that must be hard not having your daughter with you Sandy. Good thoughts going out for both of you.

Beautiful shot and words. If you go past Surf City to Topsail beach (heading in the opposite direction of North Topsail which I think is where you are) and after you get the Sea Vista and keep going to the end (or as far as you can) and walk to where the ocean and sound meet there is a big breeding ground for birds or there used to be. I know some still breed there but not as much as before they built all those condos. Anyway that's my favorite place for bird watching.

I may have mentioned it before but I was upset when the state approved the road and condos at that end of the island. The sea vista used to be the last thing and the rest was wild. The problem is not only did it displace a lot of birds but hurricanes ended up knocking down a lot of the new condos and poured sand on the road and then the state had to deal with it (the road). There was a lot of controversy about how building should never have been allowed and it kind of ruined Topsail for me because I remember when I could watch the birds with all their habitat and much was lost. Now that I've been depressing the point is that's probably still a good bird watching part of the island. I'm sure you know all of this since you live there.

I used to go to Topsail a lot but since my sister and her family has a house on Atlantic Beach and my family gathers there, I don't go to Topsail as much but when I do I always walk to that end of the island (southern end as opposed to North Topsail Beach).

    Happy Valentine's Day.

  16. I can't say I know what you mean about missing your daughter. My own Chick-a-dees are downstairs watching TV (and I hope they have cleaned the cat's litter box). I know I miss my kids when they go away just overnight.
