There are some things for which it is worth getting out of bed at 2 a.m. The Paul Winter Consort's Summer Solstice celebration is one of them. My daughter and her best friend got out of the sack and into the car in time to enjoy the whole event. Adella's friend said to me, "I didn't sleep through it, but I rested through the quieter parts, and it was soothing." From a sixth grader. I love it. When it stopped being soothing, it was downright exciting. Sample the music here.

ReplyDeleteI can't think of a more wonderful place to enjoy a concert than the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It's wonderful that two young girls would be willing to get up so early to get to the concert on time. They both must be very special.

ReplyDeleteYou're reminding me of my Paul Winter albums. I don't have any on CD but have the old albums. Great shot of the church. I was married 30 years ago on the summer solstice. Hard to believe. Surely I'm not that old.
ReplyDeleteHow delightful. I am sometimes envious when people that live near larger cities have such interesting and different cultural ceremonies to attend. Lucky your daughter and her friend. What a lovely lesson.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Stratford, we'd take the train into NYC at least three times a year: St. Patrick's for Mass then Christmas shopping; one Broadway musical or another; and the Natural History museum. The train ride was always one of the attractions! I got to St. John the Divine once on my own, while I was reading "Pillars of the Earth". 'S Wonderful!

The many cathedrals around the world hold such fabulous symbolism in their carvings and have great acoustics. The Cathedral of the Black Madonna in Chartres France is an amazing place built over a druidic sacred site. Modern day druids where at Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice but they are a far cry from ancient druids.
