One Single Impression: Fissure

Heat of the sun
Deathly winter cold
Rain and snow
The weight of life itself
Over and over:
Birds and children
Animals with night eyes
Creeping and leaping

This rock
Almost as tall as I
Flat as a table
And round

Yielded to the pressure

The fissure became
A crack
Became a crevice
Became a divide

Wide enough to lose
Things in--
Jewelry and coins
Pens and scrapped love letters
Bottle caps
Sunflower seeds
And chestnuts
(You tell me....)

There are stories
Down that space
Where no hand will reach

Wind and rain
Have mulched history
As they have taken the edges
Off this rock that is two rocks.

There is silence
There is story
Sit a while
Imagine what lies
In the dark space between.

There is time.

  1. Beautiful Sandy! So peaceful. I could feel the edges of the rock...worn smooth by the weather. Secrets held within.
    Loved it!

  3. Sandy, cracks in the rock are great places for stone offerings...
Find a place where there is a crack in the rock, take what is concidered to be a valuable stone, and pray about all the things that are trying to keep your attention from heavenly things. Put all that into the stone and give thanks. Take that stone and place it in the crack in the rock, jam it in there if you have to, whatever it takes to get it deep enough that you can't get it back out. And it is amazing when we can let go of supposed "value" and remember first words, "Let there be!" and "It is good!"

  6. So beautiful, when I first thought about the prompt, I got so many ideas in my head, you've kind of summed them all up and phrased everything so perfectly. Loved reading this.

I could see the rock, plain as day by the light of your words. The texture, the colors came alive and brought memories of rocks and stories. Beautiful.

  27. Hi Sandy,
Just rolled in from Shanghai. It is a shame, for some reason, the Chinese government blocks blogspot.com. I enjoyed your poem, a very nice introspective piece to think about after my trip. The fissures or cracks can hide many things. In the world of imagination we can capture the obscurity. Your poem describes the possibilities so well. Rob.
