This looks as if it was a fascinating Civil War encampment. I've been to a couple of these and have been very impressed with the people taking part. Thanks for the wonderful pictures.
Anyone who voluntarily parades around in a heavy wool suit in the middle of the summer like that cannot possibly be in full possession of his faculties IMO. I wonder how they decide who has to fall down and play dead. There must be some kind of system in place, just for the sake of historic accuracy, right?

I don't understand the reenactors but I'm glad they are there for us. I've seen trapper reenactors here in Oklahoma and Battle of the Alamo reeanctors in San Antonio.
From what I read they certainly go for authenticity. TMI to explain.

Wow. Wonderful photos - I can feel how hot and uncomfortable they are. Makes me feel great sympathy not only for them, but for the people they're recreating.

Terrific photos Sandy...one of my brothers in law would love to have been there, I am sure. He is always enjoying getting his school classes to reenact certain events like this! Noticed we were neighbors on My World sign in page today! ;-)
Very interesting set of images, Sandy. Really an excellent post. Here in Piedmont and in Tuscany as well, there are often war celebrations but I must say I don't like them: I think war must be always remembered but not celebrated. Don't you think so?
DH is a greater reader of Civil Way history and we just watched a two hour special on the History Channel tonight. I'm sending him this link. He is going to love seeing these pictures.
Fortunately they came in peace! And very dashing the soldiers are too, but that handsome horse is what catches my eye. I am so pleased he does not have to face a calvalry charge.

Great shots! Ironically, I am camped out at a Walmart not 24 miles from Gettysburg. I just watched the first 45 minutes of the movie on DVD in my notebook PC. My son John and I really get into Gettysburg - the story, the battlefield, everything.
Beautiful costumes and pictures ! I love to see these old costumes, and the man with the cup had even modern glasses already, lol ! That's like our reconstitution of the Waterloo battle, you have the soldiers in their old costumes but with digital watches, hehe !

There is a reenactment here every May. They reenact battles etc. They call it the Rendezvous. Fun to go see every so often. Great photos here.

ReplyDeleteIt is a shame that it took a war to try and show the South the truth of slavery and the need to abolish it.
I believe in state`s rights but not when those rights not equal for all living in those states.
I've seen a couple of these gatherings over the years and it is like stepping back into time... Great photos.

That is what I want to do. I drove through Virgina and heard a radio ad about a really nice one. Maybe I can see one at Gettysburg.
