We visited the Mark Twain (top) and Harriet Beecher Stowe (center) houses in Hartford on Saturday. Both sites offered special activities as part of Connecticut Open House Day.

From Twain: "A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval."

From Stowe: "The truth is the kindest things we can give folks in the end."

The roses basking in the sun in one a formal garden on the Stowe property.

  3. Wow Sandy, I haven't seen the Mark Twain house in years! I went there on a field trip when I was in middle school or highschool I think. It was too long ago! Nice photos. Thanks for the memories!

We visited the Twain House a coouple of times. I was always struck by the "constructed whimsy". I remember that Twain grew up in Hannibal Mo., but he wrote in Hartford.

His biographer Justin Kaplan called the house's exterior, "'gingerbread Gothic', ... 'part steamboat, part medieval stronghold, and part cuckoo clock.'"

Clemens's house is quite dark inside, quite the contrast, apparently, to the way Clemens was...Outgoing, jovial, bit of a tease... The Clemens were quite friendly with the Stowes, and a good thing, too. The front of Twain house, instead of facing the street, faces the back of the Stowe house, a no-no for the time. There is a small spread of lawn between the houses and the buildings that were their carriage houses basically abut. A little expensive, but a fun stop nonetheless.

  23. Oh I love that top house! I know Twain had a home near St Louis, maybe a childhood home but I don't think I've ever made it over there to see it.

That first house pictured is amazing! I would live there. :)

  24. My favorite is Stowe's house. Have you read the Pulitzer prize bio of her? It's upstairs but my daughter got it for me (one of her professors was the author). I am obsessed with Stowe. The bio was riveting. Her house is so meaningful for me. I love your photos, Sandy. (Amy's Crazed Sophie Beagle dug up my only peonies that I planted here.)
