Instructions on the Care of a White Oak

The white oak prefers deep, well-drained soils, grows best

In neutral to acidic soil.  Winter

And early spring are the best time to prune;

Ideal to mulch with its leaves to create

The forest situation, encourage

Right conditions for spring ephemerals

As well. These plants flower and fade early,

Adding to the biome before shade leaves

Take their places in summer’s canopy.

The white oak is a durable, long-lived

Tree who knew your grandmother as a child

And wonders where and how you keep your heart.

Earth’s deep breath begins at Mighty Oak’s crown,

Life’s gift to you, small life born close to the ground.
