For, lo! the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. (The Song of Solomon ii. 11, 12)*
From August 9, 2012 |
A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the turtle standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the little old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down." (Stephen William Hawking (b. 1942), British theoretical physicist)

ReplyDeleteSlow and steady. Their slow gait indicate they have all the time in the world for their keeps. They are cute in their own way! Nice write Sandy!

ReplyDeletesmiles...funny story....and great pic...usually see lots of turtles out here after the rain....and will have to check their backs next time...smiles.
ReplyDeleteI actually had a professor in college who tried starting a conversation with the class to loosen things up. He took a drag on his cigarette and said, "I heard that the Flat Earth Society threw in the towel last week". I was one of the few who laughed!
ReplyDeleteHi there - nice story about the turtles!
ReplyDeleteInterestingly (and surprising given my almost total lack of knowledge of things pertaining to the bible!) I know the quote that you started you post with. The Turtle in the quote is the Turtle Dove - I kind of migratory pigeon which used to be seen as a marker of the coming of spring. Although I have to say the vision of lots of turtles (shelled type!) getting together and voicing an opinion is a great idea!

I really loved this.;) Sometimes the simple thinking can be amusing and reassuring.;)
ReplyDeleteGo turtles.;)

I love to hear different stories like this.
ReplyDeleteNative American stories are similar but you know when you investigate and go deeper, a lot of them make sense. They are all lovely stories.
Thanks for being here.
