Last week, our school took the sophomore class on a field trip while the juniors took the ACT test. We stopped at a gallery that was showing local middle and school students' artwork. This was my favorite:
Here's a collabortive piece done by our high school students:
After that, we moved along to visit some military memorials. A Vietnam veteran and a Marine veteran who was in Beirut, Lebanon, at the time our embassy was bombed were on hand with their wives to talk to us about Lebanon, 9/11, and Vietnam. Here is the local monument commemorating the Marines who perished in Lebanon as well as the four who died in Grenada:
The 9/11 memorial was a remnant of the Twin Towers. Everyone touched the jagged edge as he or she walked by. These kids were toddlers on that horrible day, but they know now what they couldn't know then: 9/1l shaped their world.
The Vietnam memorial was just as amazing as the previous two memorials. The names of the fallen were etched in glass, and the effect was ghostly. Can't even tell you. So many of our students had family members who were there. Some had multiple family members there, and they paid their respects.
The names of the fallen who came home were followed by an asterisk. Those who were still at large were followed by a circle.

I love the artwork. I can see why you liked the turtle best. It is sad to think that this generation of kids will have a war to commerate too. Possibly another. Will it all not end??
ReplyDeletewars have defined most generations as man continues to battle without learning the lessons involved...
ReplyDeleteI do agree with Lin and we do seem to continue battling without learning anything. The horror yesterday of the US soldier shooting innocent people and children is a horrific example. Wonderful memorials and superb captures, Sandy!

I adore that turtle!
ReplyDeleteA great field trip leading, I'm sure, to some important discussions once back in class the next day.
ReplyDeleteThe art work is really good -- I could use that turtle here, he'd fit right in.
What a great field trip. I love the turtle painting. It looks like whoever painted it had an understanding of the dynamics of their swimming (not that I know a thing about it.)
ReplyDeleteNice memorials. Taking kids to memorials is important so they can remember that freedom does have a price.
Absolutely fantastic artwork.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of memorial, I can imagine how touching the experience must have been.
Hello Sandy, I love the turtle too, it is a beautiful painting. The memorial is very touching and reminds me of the War Memorial in DC. Thanks for sharing, have a great day!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the Wall in Washington. Still one of the most remarkable things I've seen.

So many memorials - when will we learn?
ReplyDeleteLove the artwork!
Wonderful field trip. Love both of the art pieces you shared. It is too bad we have memorials for war ... so much to remember ... so much to learn for everyone.
ReplyDeleteBoth artworks are beautiful! Every highschool should take this trip to experience what has shaped our history!
ReplyDeleteSandy, this is a wonderful field trip! Great photos! I know the kids learned a lot. It is so important that they understand all the aspects of our history! I used to comment on your blog...was on again off again during a two year difficult period for us, and now we have moved to AZ and I am back into blogging! Good to see your post!
ReplyDeleteSo fantastic art work the students have done! I love the first one and its colors!! =) The #2 is good no 2.. :)
ReplyDeleteVery fine art works!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures of memorial.
That's so touching and such an important exposure for kids. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being here.
