Today's Flowers: Hosta

From August 18, 2011

One of the great treats about spending a season in the south is enjoying the longevity of flowers as well as the recurrent blossoming of them. When my daughter and I were at the New Hanover County Arboretum in August, we glimpsed some hosta, which would have been long gone in Connecticut at that point. I love this flower. My grandmother used to have loads of it in her backyard, so for me it is the macaroni and cheese of flowers--a comfort to experience for what it is and for all the associations it brings to mind. After my gram passed, my father dug up much of her hosta and brought it to our home. When we moved again, so did the flowers. When I had my own home, gram came to stay through her flowers. And there she was in North Carolina, much to my surprise and deep pleasure.

  6. Hi,
Thank you for the heart-warming story.
We have white flower's hosta in my garden. I like also leaves as much as flowers.
    Have a fabulous week.

  9. I was not able to get my nana's Sweet Peas from her garden after she passed away but they still follow me. Next year I intend to plant some so my nana will "stay through her flowers". That is a line of poetry.

  12. How lovely that you have this way of connecting with your grandmother... and that she lives on through such a beautiful flower. Something your daughter will always keep close to her, too.

  18. Hi Sandy, this is such a great close-up of the hosta flowers, makes you realize how pretty those blooms are. For some reason my hosta's did very poorly this year. Someone trimmed them for me and they didn't do well at all afterwards. I'm hoping they will come back to life next growing season.
