The annual Bethlehem Fair in Bethlehem, Connecticut, always offers a blend of local agriculture and farm produce, kids' art, crafts, bazaar tents, wonderfully greasy food, and rides. The rides and the animals are about all we need. And the lights!

This guy I could live without the Pharaoh of that horrid boat ride through the air, the Pharaoh's Revenge, stops my heart because my daughter must get on it, and on it she gets and away they go. I am just glad she didn't do what her friend did, which was stand up in the back of the boat in mid-air. We work so hard to keep them alive....

This grand lady seemed bored with all of us. The cows seemed to be all about bodily functions when we were there. When two little girls climbed into one of the stalls and grabbed a little cow by her ominously raised tail.....We did not watch. Couldn't.

And then of course there's the stuff. While my daughter was waiting to climb the rock wall, I had a look around and was struck by these strangely disembodied, eyeless heads somehow gazing down at the passing revelers. It was weird; I liked it.

Love your captures for the day! I always enjoyed the fairs when I was a kid, but have to admit I was glad we didn't have any in Montana where my kids grew up -- therefore I didn't have to worry about the wild rides etc. Hope you have a great week, Sandy!

The county fair, an American tradition I used to enjoy. In recent years there seems to be less emphasis on the parts I enjoy, woodworking and needle arts. It seems sad that today we are more interested in buying than making but I see signs of a comeback as the population ages.
ReplyDeleteFairs are always so entertaining even if you just go for a corn dog and people watching. That would be me. :)

ReplyDeleteThe cow is my favorite capture. She looks so unconcerned and peaceful … and perhaps (as you say) a little bored. I love the Ferris Wheel at night with all the pretty lights. It’s usually the calmest ride at the fair.

So funny to have your comment about the disembodied heads. Why waste money on the whole mannequin when you just want to sell the hats? No different than the headless.bodyless ones with bras on them. lol

ReplyDeleteI just love Fairs. Not all of the fairs just parts of the fairs. I love the critters and the kids who raised them for the projects, all the 4H arts and crafts stuff.

We used to go to the County Fair every summer, without fail when we lived here in Oregon. And we were here this summer during the time, but it just never occurred to me to want to go. (Guess I'm getting old.) Your photos make me realize what we missed though -- there really is nothing like the Fair.

Sandy, wouldn't you be bored being ties up all day with a lot of people you don't know expecting you to do the pretty to them. Cows only really respond to people they know well and like better.
ReplyDeleteI know my children did crazy stunts in their teens but nothing quite as nutty as standing up in an open, moving object in mid-air.
I like the way you have blurred the people.
I'd be wary of a cow with her tail up, especially after just watching a video of a cow seeing off a black bear...!
