I've passed this cemetery in Roxbury, Connecticut en route to my parents' home many a time this winter. Only lately have the gravestones emerged from the snow to retell their old, unchanged stories. Thinking of how old these stones are, it seemed to me a season of several weeks isn't much time at all. On the one hand, this is a morbid place, but on the other, it is not because it is a beautiful place for stopping and spending time with the spirit of people and stories of the past and the beautiful, aging trees. This place tells me nothing is forever and everything is forever, so live well.

Love your thoughts as always, Sandy. Reading you late in the evening is like taking a tranquilizer and suddenly I can say -- yep, all is well!! And it is! Have a wonderful tomorrow!

death is part of life, simple truth
ReplyDeleteto have a place that reminds us, as you say, to stop and spend time with the spirit of those who have gone before is lovely. as is your photograph.
Great flow of thoughts.
ReplyDeleteA very meaningful picture now.
Great shot, Sandy. It's so true: nothing is forever and everything is forever.
ReplyDeleteMy absolutely favorite post of your s dear Sandy. The sentiments expressed here speak volumes to me. Cemeteries carry a gentle melancholy, they signify the relativity of time and make us aware how fragile we really are - and how extraordinary too.
ReplyDeleteAs a young teenager I wrote an assay about a walk in the cemetery and I recall how impressed my teacher was. It is by far the best piece I have written to date.
Beautiful and powerful image as well - what a great post indeed...
xoxo
Beautiful image, so stark and barren in the snow. It almost looks like it could be natural landscape in the desert with rock formations. But more poignant with your words.
ReplyDeleteStunning and thoughtful. I like this very much!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thought, love the shot too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely photo and sentiment! I actually enjoy cemeteries, and if they are historic even more so. :)
ReplyDeleteI never find cemeteries sad places..lovely photo.
ReplyDeleteAmen. The stones emerging from the snow storm reminds us that we can recover from anything. Time is what it takes.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot, Sandy. I too like to walk around cemeteries, but haven't brought my camera to any yet...
ReplyDeleteCemeteries are fascinating places to me. It is interesting to think about the difference in the cultures that put so much emphasis on them compared to the ones that don't even have them.
ReplyDeletewonderful photo, I love to walk through cemeteries and feel the spirits of the families who lie there and wonder about their stories...
ReplyDeleteI love graveyards and the stories they tell. Beautiful...
ReplyDeleteThere is beauty in all things. And you always find it!
ReplyDeleteThe dark stones again the snow, wow!
I like the way it is emerging as if it were a buoy that had floated to the top of the ocean. http://looseleafnotes.com

Once in a while I like to visit the people in a cemetery.
ReplyDeleteOurs here have the pictures of the people who passed away which makes it a lot more personal. I know who is beside my Mom and I say Good day to you Mrs. G. and the prayer I say to my Mom is said to her as well.
But once my son had a project for school to visit an old cemetery and we got to see history written all over it. It was quite an experience.
I am just sorry they don't allow you to plant anything. Many times I thought to spread some seeds so a carpet of something grows like grass which can flower.
But as of yet I havent figured out what.
Great words to ponder.
ReplyDeleteAnd a wonderul scene.
Have a lovely day.
Those departed are still with us so gravestones are merely markers of their time on earth and their passing to the next world. Your last line says it all Sandy. That's what every day should be all about. Great post friend!!
ReplyDeleteHugs, G
In my day, did plenty of gravestone rubbings. . . and I like to meander among the stones and read the memories. . . sooooo much snow they must have had around them!
ReplyDeleteI was first attracted by your beautiful picture, but fortunately I read your words. I'm very impressed with your thoughts and I really like your last line. What great advice: 'nothing is forever and everything is forever, so live well'.
