Everything here
Begins as a loving embrace
Of itself.
Look around:
The skunk cabbage
The wild carrot
The daisy
The milk pod
The water lily
Also the Canada geese
Curled tight once in their shells
The butterflies
And the muskrat and beaver
Inside their warm mothers
You and I
We began that way,
Too.
The same is true
When we begin again:
A few steps
Perhaps flight
Perhaps a swim
Perhaps standing still--
Our faces in the sun
For as long as the sun
Will shine.
You love yourself,
You love the world.
It is the only way.

"You love yourself,
ReplyDeleteYou love the world."
This is exactly what Jesus says:"Love your neighbour as you love your self"... When I say that we have to love ourselves, people think I am crazy. But if you don't like yourself you cannot love your neighbours.
This is a beautiful poem, Sandy!
I really like this poem Sandy. It makes me think of how often I have tried to retreat into that cocoon before I actuallly was fully released and able to love myself.
ReplyDeleteMarvelous words as always, Sandy, and ones we all need to hear -- repeatedly, as problems and hurts frequently cause us to forget. Have a lovely weekend!

Pain may make everyday life miserable, but for the true poet it is the catalyst for beauty and truth. This is just one of several wonderful poems you've written in the past few weeks.
ReplyDeleteThis is an absolute treasure Sandy. Beautifully expressed, I love what you've done with this prompt. Your writing is so evocative these days, even more so than usual. Another blessing...

Great allegory!
Beautiful poem!! And so true...it does begin with an embrace of some fashion. Now if we could count on it ending that way...???!!! And if we could receive embraces throughout our lives...wow! That would be so cool!!

Wonderful, inspiring thoughts! Love the idea that beginning again is like the birth of new life!
ReplyDeleteEach day is a new beginning. And I agree those beginnings are similar to others in nature. The difference between our beginnings and those of flowers or animals? We have a choice. Peace. My best, Rob.
ReplyDeleteYES!!
ReplyDeletethis is really wonderful, the kind of poem that can be read over and over again. I love the thoughts it inspires and the rhythm as well.
ReplyDeleteYou have taken the concrete and created a spirituality out of it.

ReplyDeleteEntering into existence in a loving-self-embrace.
How beautiful and perfect and simple and true.
such a word, embrace :)
I do this when I am moved to overwhelmingly appreciative feelings about things and people around me too...when I think I might burst with it all otherwise :D
Very nice Sandy!
ReplyDeleteLike all other creatures, we evolved that way...have emerged from our own respective cocoons...:)
This poem is hauntingly and introspectively beautiful. I am finding the need to go into my cocoon now and again and hopefully get what I need while I am in there. Take care...
