Drive as fast as you want
At this early hour
I will not move.
Can you see me?
Can you care?
I will not move.
My children
Will have their breakfast
Here at the side of the road;
I will not move.
They will take what they need;
I will protect them from you.
I will not move.
I stand in the middle of your lane
Impassive, immovable, impermanent.
Yes, that.
There is only so much I can do,
But I,
Their mother,
Will do it.
Like you,
I am hard-wired for love.
Survival
Depends on love.
It is an essential
Accident of nature.
It is not a choice.
I must love.
Love is who I am.
This is a fine thing.
I will not move.

Love often brings us to that immovable spot.
ReplyDeleteI like this poem.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a family of ducks last week caught on the median between the north and south lanes of a major highway in Toronto. The parents were trying to get the ducklings to water so were not eating as in your poem. Someone actually caught the action on his cell phone after calling 911. Several times, Mom duck stepped out then stepped back with her brood. Finally a policeman arrived, stopped the traffic and let the ducks pass...just like the children's book Make Way For Ducklings. I kid you not, the cell phone video mad the local news. ;)
OK, not the same as your poem but you DID remind me of the news story.
I like this Sandy.
ReplyDeleteWe have two ducks that keep returning to our pool, even though it chlorinated . I look at them in the early morning hours and just wonder at what they are thinking.
It shows how we really do care about others especially our kids...when everything else fails but not for our love with our family!
ReplyDeleteNothing can really move us like that!
beautiful thoughts Sandy!
Sandy, so beautiful and impressing...
ReplyDeleteat once visceral, instinctual and noble. I like that you say that we're hard wired for love. I used to think love is what made us human, I now know it's what makes us alive.
ReplyDeleteFull of love and feelings, love it Sandy.
ReplyDeleteI don tknow if Iam right...but...I think so that u are talking about someone ....u were waiting for...while your children were...close to u....
ReplyDeleteI dont know....but I like....

Some of the wisest words I have read:)
Wonderful as always and like Aayushi Mehta wrote, definitely some of the wisest words I've ever read I've read, too. It happens and, no, it isn't a choice. Hope you have a beautiful Memorial Day weekend, Sandy!

We are wired for love but we fail to reconize love
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy -- I haven't had a chance to make my rounds, so I appreciate your visit...otherwise I may have missed this poem. A wonderful voice speaking for a brave woman, a passionate woman, a woman filled with both dangerous love and kind love, weaving in and out of the lines. "Survival / Depends on love. / It is an essential / Accident of nature. / It is not a choice." Thanks.
ReplyDeletelove, an immovable force, such wonderful prose.
ReplyDeleteWonderful poem indeed, full of feeling. Love is essential in our life, we can't do without it. I think the Universe itself is love.
ReplyDeleteGreat words on love. So true.
ReplyDeleteThe love of a mother for her children is a powerful thing. You capture the emotion, determination and passion in your poem. How else can we go on without love in our life? Love comes with responsibility and also a willingness to forgive. Have a good day. My best, Rob.
ReplyDeleteGreat take on the prompt, Sandy. All my mom love rose to the surface while I read this. We are fierce protectors of our children. Thanks for this piece!

ReplyDeleteLove is soooo powerful. It can move mountains.
ReplyDeleteYour words reveals that.
I can feel it.
"There is only so much I can do,
ReplyDeleteBut I,
Their mother,
Will do it."
Expresses both limitation and yet unlimited will.
And that is power of LOVE.
Thank you Sandy.
I wish all mothers knew this kind of immoveable protection...thank you for this snippet of steadfastness!

Back from Arizona and Mexico, I am reflecting on your poem again. You write so easily about life. Putting to words what otherwise passes us by.
ReplyDeleteAn uncharacteristic mid-week effort from me. :)
