"Most of the amber that exists today is between 30 and 90 million years old."
This piece you hold
Has endured forever
Which was yesterday
Which is your life
And the history of the world.
You see the remains
Of an insect or dust
On a foggy day
In that semi-precious
Bit of history
Set in a ring
Around your finger?
So it is.
So it will be.
Such is life.
We endure.

I think those creatures found in amber are amazing. So is your poem.
ReplyDeletethis poem and your last piece are two of your best ever! Wow! stunning! well done my dear friend!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful -- both the words and the pictures.
ReplyDeleteAmazing picture. Looks like a fairy caught in the amber.
ReplyDeleteGhost, Goblins, Ghouls, Oh, My
Sandy: I think this is the way Jurassic Park started, be careful on Halloween.
ReplyDeleteI see the word 'amazing' in the comments above. That's the exact word that comes to my mind. Well done.
ReplyDeleteTwo pieces of jewelry have always fascinated me, my mother's amber earrings and my grandmother's mustard seed necklace. I am now the humble vessel which both adorn...until I pass them on to my granddaughter, who I hope will be able to see the meaning in both. No one owns such beauty...we merely borrow their essence. Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteSandi
Speaking of jewelry, that's this post: a jewel.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of my latest attempt? http://hastyruminations.wordpress.com/2009/10/31/controversial-wjla-breast-exam-video/
It is true that so much of our past history is still with us in present time...just changed forms at times.
ReplyDeleteVery fine reflection, Sandy. Reading your meaningful post, I'm thinking of what is human life compared with 90 millions years.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!
one of life's great lessons and quite a great fact! didnt know amber is that precious.
ReplyDeletebeautiful poem dear:)...so is the picture:)
ReplyDeleteLovely take and one that speaks to me, fascinated as I am by amber.
ReplyDeleteForty-one years and counting .. too much shift in time. You did wonderfully well with the prompt Sandy.

I like your percepton of Amber!
ReplyDeletedeathly adventure
You capture the huge expanse of time perfectly here.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poem and stone.
ReplyDeleteSandy,
ReplyDeleteit's a way of reminding how things could have been in a shift in time!
the pic is very good!
:)
Are we captured in the amber, only to be rediscovered? Aging, but not aging? Superb use of this idea for the prompt. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteYou captured the infinity of time so well in this poem...beautiful!
ReplyDeletewe do endure forever which pretty much puts everything else in perspective..I like your poetic images
ReplyDeletewe endure.....:)
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Combination of words and a photograph.
ReplyDeleteOne of my prized possessions is a belt buckle my Grandfather made for me incorporating some moss agate. I've thought a bunch of times about how long ago the stone was formed and where is it going to be 100 years from now and a million years from now.
Makes me think of stability-always being.
ReplyDeleteI think the last two line "Such is life./We endure" captures the whole poem perfectly. Thoughtful.
ReplyDeleteYou've captured the very concept of timelessness in this Sandy. In that beautiful way that only you can.
ReplyDeleteI have often reflected similarly when looking at amber... but you said it ten times better. :) This was beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour first line really grabbed me, as though we really can 'hold' a piece of time. Great job! Wonderful take on the prompt!
ReplyDeletefrozen in time, I like that, our past will always be around somehow
ReplyDeletethe piece you hold
ReplyDeletehas endured forever
which was yesterday!
i loved this lines!
Wow!
ReplyDeleteIn these simple lines
the thought exploded
with sentimentality.
nostalgic and touching
at the touch of an ember.
You bring me back
to a memory that i no longer hold.
full of wisdom!
ReplyDelete..
ReplyDeletelovely ..
This is beautiful. Such an enormous span of time encapsulated in a jewel of poetry!
ReplyDeleteAmber is truly amazing, as is your lovely poetry!
ReplyDeleteSandy, some hoe I posted a comment that ended up on Autumn. Oh well. Wonderful my friend.
ReplyDeletelove, Melaniwtestor
what a stunning image captured!! and beautiful reflective words..
ReplyDeleteWonderful contemplative piece, Sandy. Yes, we endure, but we also fade away or go out in a blaze of glory.
ReplyDelete"forever . . . which was yesterday" is a perfect description of eternity. What a great connection with the amber. You are just so talented.
ReplyDeleteThis is really goofy, but it reminds me of Richard Attenborough's cane in "Jurassic Park", topped by a giant mosquito encased in amber. Wearing or carrying little bits of the past...
ReplyDelete"This piece you hold
ReplyDeleteHas endured forever
Which was yesterday"
Wow- I never thought about it that way...very thought provokingly written- thanks
Reading your words, I think of amber in its liquid form, the life blood of trees, becoming more solid over the years. And we, losing our solid forms to become vapor. Beautiful as always. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThat is right, Sandy. We don't appreciate this pretty stone as much as your writer.
ReplyDeleteShe would have loved to have lived in Catherine the Great's Winter Palace. There is more amber there than you could ever imagine.
..
Thanks for being here.
