Your eyes
Are a window into
Your soul.
You look at me,
I look away.
In a while, I think,
I will meet your gaze.
But not now.
I turn to watch the sea
Roll in on me over and over again,
And light passes through the sea
And becomes something else
Became the life
Of the sea itself
Light and life
I turn again
Ready now
To look me in the eye.

I am looking!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great poem.
I have spent years at sea. Your poem captures it very well. It calls this to mind:
ReplyDeleteJe sui desole.

I was so surprised at the end. I got such a romantic feel then I realized you were looking inward. Something we should all do occasionally. What do we reallly want? What do we really feel? What do we really need?
ReplyDeleteThe end really caught me, and changed the whole meaning of the poem. This was beautiful! Very deep, just like the rolling sea.
ReplyDeletesometimes we need a brief moment or two to get ourselves ready... lovely poem
ReplyDeleteinsightful poem, don't we all avoid ourselves at times?
ReplyDeleteIt is an amazing thing when the windows of the soul and the eyes connect with each other.
ReplyDeleteNicely done.. unexpected and lovely.
ReplyDeleteyou have taken me there, to a quiet place of light and waves, a quiet unmet gaze and then the presence to look. Lovely.
ReplyDeletesubtle but meaningful
ReplyDeleteYou've taken an old phrase and breathed new life into it. Good twist.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done. I especially like the imagery of inward looking, the sea, and life intertwined.
ReplyDeleteA lovely respite by the sea. Deep and all encompassing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes when looking at self it pays to be blind, because we are too influence by what others think they see .. and therefore judge ourselves by what is hidden behind others windows.
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely. Awesome picture and poem.
ReplyDeleteInteresting twist at the end. Love the photo too! Peace, JP/deb

ReplyDeleteI loved it. The words and photo both capture beautifully the way the sea can just carry us away, or back in again... suddenly I'm wanting to go to the ocean?! LOL

ReplyDeleteGreat poem accompanied by a very fine image, Sandy.
ReplyDeleteThe unspoken question I see here is "Are the eyes a window, or a mirror?"
ReplyDeleteOr both... that really depends on which side the brighter light is on.
I love the way you shifted persons, like the light coming to light, the curl of surf as persuasive as Sophocles.
ReplyDeleteThis gave me much to think about!

ReplyDelete"In the mood for you now." You got some inspiration from you and your daughter's walk on the beach and then over to Shackleford Island?
ReplyDeleteWe have a Mustang Island at Port Aransas, Texas, near Corpus Christi.
Horses from Spain were introduced to Texas there. Now it is a wild life sanctuary of 3954 acres for mostly small animals and LOTS of birds.
