There is a legal graffiti wall on Water Street in New Haven, Connecticut, that is tightly maintained by Reo, a very talented young guy from Connecticut. Painting here is by-invitation only, and the standards are high. This is a bright spot in a tough neighborhood near the railroad station and the joys and wonders, shall we say, of the harbor. These walls are near High School in the Community, where it seems these writers inspire the kids inside to come out and play:

Grafitti can be both fine and bad. These you've got here are fine. They have nice colors. The first one is a bit frightening. The prettiest is the last one, I think.

I think it's neat the kids are given a place to be creative. I really like the one of the child and the tree.

The style and the framing of the photo make it seem almost like a traditional painting, but the cracks and texture of the wall - as well as the written words - create a vivid contrast to that impression. There's a sort of tension between the beauty of the art, the scary possibilities it suggests and the evident imperfections of reality.

Great works of art. In the city of Massillon Ohio there is several works of art on buildings as well.One depicts life in the city in the past.one is dedicated to football

One shows the Ohio Erie canal and what life was like back than.
I don't ever see graffiti and not think of you. These are truly works of art. I think it is wonderful that kids have a place to express themselves.
ReplyDeletePowerful images, and, the first time I've ever been able to "read" something! I like the designs that almost look legible, but sometimes get frustrated, feeling that I"m on the outside of the meaning because I don't understand the shorthand.

ReplyDeleteI've always been astounded at just how good some of these can be. Back in the day, I never would've thought of a spray bomb as an artistic tool, but there can be no denying the artistry in this work. Good for Reo, keeping it under control. And for giving an outlet to this kind of talent.

ReplyDeleteI think it is a good idea to standardized graffiti murals to be maintained and supervised so no vandals would mess it up.
ReplyDeleteWe have graffiti murals here and some of them look disgusting because of illegal graffiti markers who just cannot discipline themselves.
Great way to spend someone's energy to work on their talent. I do believe Graffiti is an ART not as a form to create rubbish.

That's great pieces of art! The messages the artist expressed really came out strong. I've seen legal grafitti several places in Europe also and actually I'm working with a post from Wirrabara. They have small paintings all over town and I just saw them on Sunday. Well, the coincidence made me smile. Have a great week!

Sandy! I must really thank you for the kind comments. They are really too much honour! I get all the historical background from Google and Wikipedia and I learn a lot myself by looking facts up. So I am really not that clever that I know that all by myself.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of controlled graffiti. It allows for otherwise frowned upon expression and takes the sting out of "defacing" property. You've sure captured some colourful art.
