Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day:
These are the three holy days
When an early morning walk is worship.
There is not silence but peace;
On this day, one is not the other.
The walk is not movement across the earth
But a deep embrace, a good morning,
A falling into the arms of every beautiful thing,
A wide-eyed waking up and seeing
That the world is good.
These are the three holy days
When an early morning walk is worship.
There is not silence but peace;
On this day, one is not the other.
The walk is not movement across the earth
But a deep embrace, a good morning,
A falling into the arms of every beautiful thing,
A wide-eyed waking up and seeing
That the world is good.

ReplyDeleteYour words bring peace to life as opposed to an abstract concept! Beautifuly done!
ReplyDeleteVery moving. I particularly like the line:
ReplyDelete"The walk is not movement across the earth/
But a deep embrace," An unusual and appropos metaphor. Have you heard of the "walking meditation" practiced by Buddhists?
peaceful photo and poem...enjoyed them both.

ReplyDeleteHi Sandy -- This is a perfect poem for you, a regular walker. I used to run, I am trying to think if I had worshipful thoughts on these holy days. I think I did until my mind wandered.
ReplyDeleteYour poem is very pretty and mood setting. I like the cattail picture also.

Cat tails! Gosh, haven't seen them in awhile, thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteAnd good words to express it. When you can feel like this on a morning walk, the whole day goes well.
ReplyDeleteI love it! We are usually gone on Thanksgiving, but I have not missed my early morning Christmas walk in the woods in 25 years, even if it meant using snowshoes.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely shot and the poem compliments it.
