We went to Ocean Beach Park in New London, Connecticut, on Memorial Day. There we saw seagulls, cormorants, a crane, and this endangered piping plover whose egg lay in the sand on the beach. My daughter, her friend, and I guarded it like mother hens. Though our efforts kept the heavy feet of a marauding bunch of sun bathers from scrambling it, we didn't help this bird get any closer to it! (More photos are here.)

ReplyDeleteSad story for the bird, but awesome picture!
ReplyDeletetouching story. wonderful capture
ReplyDeletePoor little bird. They do merge into the background, don't they? What a place to raise a family on the crowded beach.
ReplyDeleteA share the sentiments of the other commenters. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteGreat effort put up by three of you, the bird must have been wondering what your actual intentions are.

ReplyDeleteahhh, so cute! thanks for stoppin' by too. Have a great day :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy. Yes that poor little bird. Animal mothers don't have all the sense that we humans have.
ReplyDeleteDid you know a mama pig will lay on some of its babies? And this bird dropping that egg right there?
Guess that egg wasn't meant for procreation but for being a part of the food chain.
Happy WW/WT. I had to comment, this pathetic picture couldn't be just all bad news.
..
Sweet looking little bird :)
ReplyDeleteAww, poor bird....I bet if she knew you tried, shed appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteShoshana
So what happened to the egg? Did you move it to a safer place? Poor babies.

ReplyDeleteI really love her camoflague behind the grasses. What a lovely capture.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy, Great catch! You can see the expression of the little bird looking for her eggs.
ReplyDeleteDona Nobis Pacem!
what a lovely bird! I hope that the egg is kept safe ...
ReplyDeleteSome birds are just so stupid and sometimes very stubborn on where they want to raise their family! One of the birds at my father's house insist on making a nest in the gutter! He has removed it three times already, but they insist !
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures in your slide show by the way! Forgot to tell you!
ReplyDeletegreat photo! thanks for sharing.

Lots of types of birds nest on the beach. Not many eggs hatch.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the laws of nature seem so unfair.
ReplyDeleteGREAT picture though.

ReplyDeleteSad story but he/she is so cute and tiny. Lovely picture!
ReplyDeleteperfect catch for WW! mine's up too hope you can stop by...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot, but I do feel bad for the bird.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture! Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteSandy ~ sad story indeed, as this is an endangered Piping Plover. Many of the beaches are closed off at this time of the year to help protect this ground nesting bird. You are lucky to have sighted one. There are not many left to be seen.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture...the angle, the clarity, the subject! I enjoyed the other shots too, especially the picket fence. Looks like one mighty fine holiday weekend...
ReplyDeleteI'm going to check into slide.com - that's a great way to share.
Amazing photo!!!
ReplyDeleteMy wordless will 'tickle you'!!
Come by if you can. Happy Wednesday.
Poor little plover. Many species of plovers are endangered for that reason. We invade their spaces. At least you tried.
ReplyDeletetoo bad about the egg, but great shot of the bird!
ReplyDeleteHappy WW~
Wow - great shot.
ReplyDeletePoor birdie....:( Nice picture.
ReplyDeleteHappy WW!! Thanks for stopping by my blog.
What a shame. This is a Piper Plover and they are protected here in Connecticut. This area should be roped off for them during nesting season. I'm really surprised to see this bird was on Ocean Beach and they were allowing people to come so close.
ReplyDeletethat's very kind of you to keep it safe... i think it's really cute and worth these funny looks that those beach people might have given you :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit! It's nice to meet you. You have some great blogs.
ReplyDeleteHope she gets to hatch her egg!
ReplyDeleteNOW THAT is handsome guy!
ReplyDeleteBoy, he's sure trying hard to blend in. Poor little bird.

Wow, Sandy. the photo is really beautifully frame & the background music just makes me feel so calm staring at your photo.
ReplyDeletegreat,great entry!!
happy WW.
OOo what a gorgeous picture!
ReplyDeleteLove to watch how quickly these little guys run along the edge of the water!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot and good job saving the egg.
ReplyDeleteI love the sentiment on your globe.
Peace, love and blessings to you.
sometimes I wonder what they are thinking laying there eggs in the oddest places ----then I think that they are more like us and have no control when we give birth it is when it is wherever we are like in a car trying to get to the hosp
ReplyDeletePoor bird.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I love the picture.
Happy WW.
this was very touching sandy and a such a sweet photo of the bird.
ReplyDeleteThat is so hard when a egg is exposed like that. Very touching that you all were guarding the egg and a beautiful shot.
ReplyDeleteYour peace globe on the left is lovely. Dona Nobis Pacem
Cool picture! It almost blends right into the sand, doesn't it? Thanks! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteThis foto is absolutely incredible.
ReplyDeleteWhat a CUTE bird! I love it! Excellent photo, as well. I watched your whole slideshow - thanks for a wonderful trip to the beach.
ReplyDeletePeace to you, Sandy!
Beautiful picture of bird and beach in matching colors.
ReplyDeleteMine is not nearly as bad as it sounds - decadence, sleaze and excess.
Absolutely great photo!
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat picture.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful capture Sandy. It does seem like a strange place to raise a family, on a crowded beach...but I guess it's not so strange, since we are the interlopers in her home.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo. Hopefully that bird will find a different beach next year.:)
ReplyDeletetouching post. i love also the video on your sidebar.
ReplyDeleteGreat post for WW! Thanks for sharing and stopping by. :)
ReplyDeletesad story on the poor bird.
ReplyDeleteI got to visit a beach in CT not too long ago. It was awesome. It's beautiful country up there!
ReplyDeleteI came across a one-legged duck yesterday. He was struggling so much. I brought some food out and had to fight off the able-bodied ducks in order to make sure he got some. I love wildlife.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo! The picture itself tells a story... But my heart bleeds at how careless other people can be. :(
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks for the visit today, too...
Awwww, what a cutie! Love everything in your site; the posts, the music and yes, the photos.
ReplyDeleteHope we can exchange links.
