Listen, listen, listen, listen:
Rain at 4 a.m. Pull up the covers
Around your safe and warm sleeping body.
Keep the sweet, mothering peace of promised
New days born with open arms, open mouths,
Eyes open to catch loving mother’s gaze,
Ears listening for the hushing rushing
Mother kisses, love gifts on soft warm mouths
That will learn to form the sounds of child grace
While small hands point to the discoveries
Of every day: flowers yielding to leaves
To feast on summer sunshine and soft rain.
For now, listen as April ends in rain
Endowing May with the power to bloom again.
