A Feast

Artwork by Julia Datta, Kyiv, Ukraine (available on Etsy)

Sunflowers,

Their stems

Severed from their roots,

Nevertheless

Follow the sun.

A gift

Wrapped in tissue

And resting

On the front passenger seat

Of my Beetle,

These blossoms seek light

As I make my way

Down the interstate

From Connecticut to New York

To Pennsylvania

To you, Mom.

In the vase on your table,

Cut sunflowers

Continue their journey,

Changing the arrangement

Minute by minute.

Soon

I will return.

I will take the flowers,

Their heads bowed,

Their work inside now done.

I will put the flowers out back.

Birds will come

To feast on the seeds.

Flowers again.

Soon.
