His Queen

Following my return,
We slept back to back for a few nights,
His presence a light and comforting touch.
He faced the wall; I faced the door.

Last night,
He took the chair
Opposite my door.

He stayed there all night.

When I opened my eyes at three,
I watched him watching me,
His terrier nose
Assessing everything.

His eyes were on me
The whole time.

This is love,
I thought,
And here is my fortune:
Twelve wiry pounds of it, all mine.

In my sleep, he made me his queen.
