A friend remarked to me once that 13 hours is a long time in the car to get to the beach.
Why do that when you can hop in the car and comfortably be on the Jersey Shore in four hours?
Insert here the silence that backs away slowly lest it offend. The silence that aches with loneliness because, try as you might, wish as you will, life itself seems to keep you from sharing all that is beautiful here in a way that you wish you could.

ReplyDeleteI just own a cheap little camera. More and more I want to take pictures, to record beauty, like you do and I want my own good camera. When my husband questions my new found interest, I'll tell him you're to blame.
ReplyDeleteI have that silence here today. It sounds so good. The only thing breaking that silence is the wind blowing the snow against the window and an occasional dog howling for someone to let her in.

Love of silence is very hard to explain to those who don't revere it. And a deep love of a certain place can only be felt in the heart.

ReplyDeleteI get a sense of frustration when some people tell (not ask) "what's the point" when I share with them about blogging, photography, or geocaching or whatever.
Well, sure, silence is fine, if you're into that kinda thing.
ReplyDeleteMe, we went to the Joisey shore for maybe 12 years, after I got some loans and bought the beach house which was in my wife's family as she grew up. Her folks died, and it was breaking her heart to leave the place, so i arranged to keep it for us. Rented it out a lot.
It wasn't Wildwood noisy - this was Ocean City, more laid back. But even the ocean was noisier than North Carolina (except Hatteras - THAT is nice and noisy!).
I like the shore to be noisy enough to drown out Mrs. Esmerelda trying to get Julio to eat his samich, but not so noisy that I can't hear one of my kids screaming at a Great White or gasping his next-to-last. That kinda noisy.

A colleague and friend asked me today about the sharks on Topsail. "Never saw one," I said. She said she heard about one doing a number on a young girl. I don't know. Paradise and Easy are not synonyms in my dictionary. But if a few sharks keep the people away and the turtles do all right, they have my gratitude.

That's an absolutely stunning shot Sandy. Gorgeous. I'm lucky to be able to get to Topsail Beach in 2 1/2 hours although lately I go to Atlantic beach, NC which is 3 1/2 hours but either way beats 13 hours. I have to admit that as much as I love NC beaches I also love the very few times I've been able to visit my sister's home in Nantucket, MA. That island is wonderful. I guess I take my NC beach for granted.
