Skywatch Friday: Singing to the Blue

IMG 1158

This dove was singing into the afternoon blue one day last week when I was out for a walk near my parents' home in Newtown, Connecticut. I was about ready to take a decent shot when I heard the rumble of the UPS truck as that big, brown monster came onto the road. So this was a quick. I'm not much good at photographing animate things, so I was happy to get this guy before he flew off.

  1. So soft... and so warm against that ice blue sky. Well spotted indeed.

Nice of him to sit so still for you like that. Birds give me a fit. Even without a delivery truck to scare them off.

  4. What a gorgeous shot, Sandy! And what a lovely, little bird! He does look as though he's enjoying the blue skies! The only birds I've been able to catch are the seagulls down at the beach and if you don't have something for them to eat, you can't imagine what a sour, annoyed looking bird shot you get. One woman last year ever wrote a poem one shot that I posted. It was really funny! Hope you have a great weekend!

  7. And I am glad you got it too! It looks like a planned shot to me -- perfect that it is mostly on the left of the photo with the big limb!!!!!!!!! Centered, it would be just another photo.

  8. You've photographed the bird so well at the right moment! Generally, they suddenly fly away!
I like the tree against the deep blue sky too.

  13. Well, he must have been posing because this is a nice composition. My favorite birds in the springtime--I had two that inhabited my deck railing each spring in Chicago; first two and then 'three.'

  23. Is the dove hungry and looking for food? I fgrequently feed the pigoens with left over rice, bread and noodles.

Must confess I am a careless cook, and cook too much, So the birds get a good feed.

  27. I am laughing as I look at this - you will understand why when you see my new blog header. I also don't have the best of luck taking pictures of moving objects so was quite proud of myself when I got the shot that I did. I love mourning doves, so calm and laidback.

  31. I do not see how you could have done much better. This a wonderful shot of the dove. They sound sad to me when they make sounds.

  32. The bright blue sky is a beautiful foil for the Mourning Dove. Even though they are a common bird I love them. They are so sweet and this time of year they have beautiful iridescent plummage. Even in your photo you can see the bright blue eyering. Their feet get bright red and it looks as if someone has washed them with iridescent paints on their nape. Happy SWF.

Clever to capture the bird...they move so quickly and the moment is easily lost. A beautiful clear blue sky...a welcome contrast to my snow-filled grey horizon!

  63. That is a perfect shot, for a rushed effort, Sandy. Excellent. I love that we are so "aware" of other influences when it comes to photographing nature. I've frequently missed a perfect opportuity because a vehicle or human blundered by. Thanks for visiting my blog. It 's good to see you again. (((Hugs))) Jo
