The Winter Festival at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Connecticut, showcased some wonderful ice sculptures last weekend. Undaunted by the balmy temperatures of 40+ degrees, the sculptors carried on with their chain saws, chisels, sanders, and clothes irons to produce some great work with an Arthurian theme.
Lyman Orchards is a beautiful, family-owned orchard in the center of our little state. The orchard does a lot to bring in the public, and it gives back plenty, too. Always a good trip.

I love to watch sculptors no matter what their medium. Ice has such an other world quality.

Used to do some of this during my restaurant career (though nowhere close to this well). The guys who are really good at it have always amazed me. It's fascinating to watch them take a block of ice and turn it into something like this -- especially as fast as they can do it.
ReplyDeleteIce carving magic never ceases to amaze me. We have a bit of an ice sculpture mania up here in Fairbanks, and artists travel from all around the world to participate in creating single and multi-block sculptures that are just breath taking.
ReplyDeleteThis year, my plan is to head into the ice park minutes before it closes and spend several hours capturing the ice and the lights in the total silence of pre-dawn hours.
My first reaction was 'oh cool' but seriously that is too easy, so I will go with reaction #2 .. WOW!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteThe ice sculpture is absolutely amazing. I have always had a fascination for temporary art such as ice sculpture, snow sculpture, and sand sculpture. The time and creativity that goes into the wonderful art that only lasts a short time truly amazes me.
