One Single Impression: Thirst

How is it
Summer can collect
In the back of your throat
Like too much of a good thing?

You would wash it away
To get on with what was
To drink in simple life

As if it were there for the taking.

But

It is only dust

And it will be.

No September rain
Ever stopped the falling of leaves
The withering of the garden
The shortening of breath

That comes with early night.

Thirst can ignite
Passion for a little while
And then it consumes itself.

Call it love.
Call it burning need.
Call it the fire that shapes your soul.

It is a brief thing.

  1. it sure seems like it, doesn't it-after you wait so long for it and then it barely comes and is soon gone. Kind of like some relationships unfortunately. LOL!

  2. Yep, I am sitting here waiting for my Clarinex to kick in so summer will get out of my throat and I can lie down and sleep. Geez. I get thirsty for those projects and then I drown in the making. UGh...

  4. Yes, after all is said and done, thirst is a brief thing, but it reoccurs in every moment of our lives, and its addition is what keep us all alive --- such are the seasons of change, as in life and as in nature -- we depend on our thirst.

Yes, this was a very thought provoking poem, thank you.

  6. Thirst, tho brief, returns again and again so we may enjoy the refreshment of an ordinary thing over and over again.

It is a good thing that passion is brief. Who could sustain such a level for long? If not, wouldn't we drown from the quenching?

  27. I think... I'm going to have to think about this one. Call it "meta-thinking". Or perhaps "over-thinking". Yes of course... there's more, but for another time and place.

  32. love these lines:
    No September rain
Ever stopped the falling of leaves
    The withering of the garden

Even the most generous outpouring cannot stop the passage of time and rhythms of nature.
