Late afternoon took on a snowy glow, but we couldn't smell snow and therefore dismissed the possibility snow would come. There isn't a person I know from around these parts who doesn't claim to smell snow before it comes. If you know the smell, you're nodding right now. If you don't, then come to Connecticut and find out what cold and quiet and still and moist smell like even before they arrive.

I don't believe I have ever been able to "smell" snow, but my old knee injury knows when it's coming! It's just this awareness, not really pain, but still a reminder that I used to have an injury there - and then the forecast starts calling for snow.

Beautiful shot Sandy. My mother grew up in the mountains and she could smell snow. She was right more times than the weatherman so we trusted her.

Wonderful picture and the sun is shining. Yes I can smell snow. Glass windows also take on a leaden look when snow is about.

ReplyDeletewhen it's going to storm here, the day before is always warm and wonderful then the next day comes the snow or storm. we get little snow here so it's quite an event when it snows once or twice a year...

ReplyDeleteHere in the desert I've become highly attuned to the smell of moisture. Rain more than snow however. I do know that snow sky though.

ReplyDeleteIt used to snow in the Mississippi Delta, when I was but a child, and we smelled it too ... the old folks taught us how to recognized the smell. But it's been so long ago I can't recall what it smelled like, just that we smelled it.

ReplyDeleteSandy, I can smell snow coming. I just loved it when we lived in Manchester (NH). I still smell it every now and then and often tell someone then that if it would just be a little colder we would have snow.

ReplyDeleteI've used that term many times. We used to get lots of snow and many times each year. For the past several years we haven't gotten much at all...and I think we still have yet to get our first 1" snow this year. Supposedly Monday-Tuesday is our next opportunity for snow...we'll see.

I grew up in Chicago. We knew it would snow when the previous 16" of snow on the ground turned dark. From the overcast sky full of snow clouds.
ReplyDeleteWe also knew when the high school basketball game had already started. Yep, by the smell.
When I lived in Connecticut, we knew it would snow whenever (a) I washed the car in January; (b) I bought tickets for the whole fam damily of 6 for a Broadway show; and (c) the TV weather forecast promised clear and warmer.
Lovely bit of color in that sky! I can't smell snow....although at the momemnt, I can sure see it. I think I will skip Conecticut at this time of year! I know the snow is coming when I run out of birdseed and the bully birds show up.

Can smell when it's going to rain too. of course, I'm taking in a far larger air sampling than most;-)) I love that this is about a place, you can't see that sky anywhere, but of course you see it everywhere all at once. ReplyDeleteI like the photo but I can't put it in context, it doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. I guess that comes from living on the other side of the world where we are sweltering (to put it mildly) and hoping to break a hundred year old record of 6 days over 40 degrees celsius.

I lived in CT for a couple years when I was first married. I never heard of smelling the snow but we could feel it coming in the air so maybe that is the same thing?

ReplyDeletei just wanted to stop by and say that i know the smell of snow very well..and it struck me, the comment you made, about coming to Connecticut...to learn what it smells like. i am from Connecticut and recently moved to TN. i think more people around here know what i mean when i talk about smelling snow then did in CT...but i have been able to smell it all my ife. to me it smells of faint, far away wood fires with a hint of the smell of rain. i am actually doign a report for school on how and why some people can smell snow.
