Blog Your Blessings: Nowhere, Nobody, Nothing

This weeks blessing: a few minutes on Sunday when there was nowhere to go, nobody to be with, nothing to say. I was on my own in thick of some Sunday sunlight and silence, so I took my camera and went for a ride. I like to go to the familiar places and try to see something differently.

Though I live in a historic, picture-postcard-perfect little town, I find it a bit uninteresting. So looking at those things that bore me in a way that is interesting is a challenge. I don't care but I want to care but I don't want to take the time to care. But Sunday I did. While I was trying to photograph a 17th century farmhouse, I turned and had a good look at the barn. The light seemed to have slipped under the clouds and taken on a life of its own. The greens became golden and the air was like liquid gold. The light was like a child running around a newly raked back yard on a cold afternoon. It was gorgeous.

I didn't quite capture that quality of the light here, but I sure did feel it. I think that is the true fun of photography for me these days. With the camera in hand, I am searching for the beautiful or at least a way of looking that captures beauty. It's a nice break; sometimes it's good to be alone.

  3. Your prose brought me right into the moment. I could see the light so to speak. ;)

It is a wonderful thing to have some time alone. It lets you open the flood gates and the creative river can flow across new ground.

  5. I'm always surprised by the amount of wood used in houses and sheds, in CT. Woods needs so much maintenance! I have a small bit on my house, I think it is a dormer, which is wood on the outside, and many Connecticut houses are completely like that. Maintenance must be a nightmare!

  8. The shadows and texture on the barn are breathtaking. It's a portrait in serenity.

Your words did not sound serene to me, however. They seemed full of a kind of longing that tears at my heart a little bit. Are you okay? Can I come give you a hug? Well, I might have to find a way to send you one... but, if I could, I'd come (and bring a big bowl of warm bread pudding and two long handled spoons) I think I'd truly enjoy a looooong afternoon visiting with you and sharing some comfort food.

  15. That is very beautiful, Sandy. I love the photo of the barn. I don't understand how you can find your, "historic, picture-postcard-perfect little town" uninteresting. I think that would be beautiful. I moved to a city in California from a small town in Wisconsin and I miss the historic downtown back home. I wish I could go for a ride in the countryside like you do. This country is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your photo and beautiful words!

  18. Hi Sandy, I was doing some Sky Watch Comments and noticed that the two times I clicked onto 251, Finland, my computer went crazy. Maybe it's just me but it's the only one that did that. I had to close everything down and start over. Weird. As I said, it could just be my computer. Thank you so much to all of you for taking care of SWF. I sure do love it.

  19. I had to come back and take another look at this barn. Well... about my ninth look, actually. It seems to have a hold on me. I love the tiny window on the facing side, and the two small doors. I'm fascinated by whatever it is that makes the star shape at the top of the rain gutter. I love the play of light and shadow. Looking at this just calms me. I'd love to have a 24X30 of this picture hanging in my living room. It just speaks to my heart. Beautiful work, Sandy!

  26. It's a lovely barn, Sandy, and a lovely photo. I know what you mean about finding new delight in the familiar....funny that I saw this right after looking at Susan in Ireland's My Wolrd post. The man who thought she was taking a stupid photograph of a bridge he found totally uninteresting mirrors the point you are making! :-) We have to be alone sometimes and try to see our surroundings with new eyes...
